Overview

The Option Greeks are the five risk measures that quantify how an option's price responds to changes in the underlying stock, time, volatility, and interest rates. Together they form the standard toolkit for position sizing, hedging, and strategy selection in options trading.

  • Delta (Δ) — the "speed" of the option: how much its price moves for every $1 move in the underlying, ranging 0 to 1.0 for calls and -1.0 to 0 for puts. Also used as a rough probability the option expires in-the-money. An at-the-money option typically has a Delta near 0.50.
  • Gamma (Γ) — the "acceleration": how much Delta itself changes per $1 move in the stock. Highest for at-the-money options and options near expiration. Option buyers are "long gamma" (Delta improves as the stock moves in their favor); option sellers are "short gamma" (Delta worsens against them).
  • Theta (θ) — time decay: the value an option loses each day from the passage of time alone, holding everything else constant. Nearly always negative for a single option and accelerates exponentially as expiration approaches. Highest for at-the-money options, which carry the most extrinsic value.
  • Vega (ν) — sensitivity to a 1% change in Implied Volatility (IV), the market's "price of fear." Longer-dated options have higher Vega. IV tends to be mean-reverting, spiking during panics (earnings, crashes) and falling during calm periods.
  • Rho (ρ) — sensitivity to a 1% change in interest rates. Positive for calls, negative for puts, and generally the least impactful Greek except for very long-dated options (LEAPS) or large institutional portfolios.

Trading Applications

  • Directional bets and hedging (Delta) — a 0.70-delta call behaves similarly to owning 70 shares per contract. "Delta-neutral" positions balance positive and negative deltas to isolate volatility (Vega) or time-decay (Theta) exposure instead of direction.
  • Gamma exposure — long straddles/strangles are "long gamma" plays betting on a large move in either direction; Iron Condor sellers are "short gamma," facing accelerating losses if the stock makes a sudden large move. "Gamma scalping" re-hedges a long-gamma position by trading the underlying as price oscillates.
  • Harvesting Theta — covered calls, credit spreads, and iron condors are "positive theta" strategies that profit from time passing with the position stable. A Theta/Gamma tradeoff exists: high positive Theta (selling) usually pairs with negative Gamma (risk).
  • Trading Vega — a classic short-vega trade sells options before earnings, betting on the post-announcement "IV crush." A long-vega trade buys options when the market is unusually calm, anticipating a coming volatility spike.

For Buyers vs. Sellers

  • Option buyers carry long Delta, Gamma, and Vega exposure, fight against daily Theta decay, and need large, fast moves to profit.
